A lye is a metal hydroxide or a strong alkali which is highly soluble in water producing caustic basic solutions. “Lye” most commonly refers to sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

Lye is used is used in making soap. It is added to water, cooled for a few minutes and then added to oils and butters.

Yes, the soaps we sell are cured and ready to use. There are two common methods for making soaps. The first one is called Hot Process. In this method, the oils are saponified by cooking and it is ready to use immediately. However, it is recommended to use after a week from cooking. The second method is called the Cold Process. In this method, oils are warmed up for melting then blended together with lye without cooking. This type of soap requires 4 to 6 weeks to cure. We use this method for the soap shapes that look nicer with precision and without any gaps. We also make sure that the soap is cured before shipping when using the latter method.

Custome orders may use the Cold Process. If so, we will ship your soaps 4 to 4 days after they are made when they are hard enough. We will label them for you to remind me of when they are ready to use. If they are for decorative purposes, you may display them immediately. To protect your soaps, keep them from excessive heat or direct sun, and use a glass dish or a coaster under the soap to avoid damaging your surfaces.
